Love is Patient, Kind…and At Times Uncomfortable

 In Marriage

You’ve heard it a million times, this passage from 1 Corinthians 13:4—  Love is patient, love is kind. I have a description to add:  Love is occasionally uncomfortable.

Many couples struggle with certain subjects—be it sex or money or parenting.  Friends of ours shared how they constantly played games and fought about money until they participated in one of Dave Ramsey’s courses.

You can’t blame people for avoiding topics that lead to conflict and energy-draining exchanges.  But doing so devitalizes the marriage.  It waters small problems, making them grow into big ones.

Love is an action, not a feeling, and often an uncomfortable action.  Authentic love is not easy.  But when we chose to lovingly engage our spouse, detached from his or her reaction, we’re really saying, “I love you”.

Necessary uncomfortable conversations will be some of the greatest acts of love you can have with your spouse.

Catholic Women’s Guide to Healthy Relationships Tip:  If there is something you are avoiding sharing with your spouse, make a date to converse.
