Being at the Right Place at the Right Time
I work weird hours. Since we’ve had children I’ve seen clients several evenings and Saturdays to minimize daycare for the kids. Because I have flexibility in my schedule I’m able to volunteer and attend many school activities during the day.
I’ve developed a philosophy regarding activities with my kids. If it is possible, even if it’s inconvenient for me to attend, then I do.
With it being the last week of school I had plenty of opportunities–from going to the annual 5th grade kindergarten zoo field trip, to volunteering all morning at the Jump the Creek station at field day, to attending the band concert. The list goes on.
Seeing my kids on their own turf with their peers sheds valuable insight into any unspoken problems or hidden strengths. Opportunities to connect with their classmates feels right as well. They will be major influencers on my children in the years to come. Knowing I have made the effort to attend these events prevents most regrets.
For me in my vocation, I strive to be at the right place at the right time by being at the big and little events for my kids, among other things. They aren’t going to be with me very long. This clarity helps me prioritize my time and makes deliberate living possible.
