Unconventionally Practical Spiritual Resolutions

 In Self

Some people subscribe to the belief that to be a “religious” person you have to you know…do “religious” things. I have found that a more practical approach has worked better for me.

The goal as I see it is to become perfect like Christ, while at the same time being true to the unique person God created me to be. In order to do that I must know where I fall short and take actions to overcome my shortcomings. Sometimes that demands a very practical strategy.

One of my weaknesses is that I am prone to put things ahead of people. I get a sense of satisfaction from crossing off a task on my to do list and often see interactions and interruptions with people as unwelcome intrusions.

I have found a simple practical spiritual activity to help me be more balanced. It also reminds me to value my time with people as high as getting that project done. Each day I list three priorities for the day. One is my work priority. The second is goal for myself. And the third is my goal for my family / relationship.

Making sure I completed this activity each day has almost become a habit. The fruit has been that instead of getting overwhelmed by the multitude of tasks and projects, I can focus on the most important one for the day. I do a better job of making proper space for myself and the people in my life.

I notice when I don’t complete this simple daily activity, I feel more scattered and am not as present with others. Remember, we don’t need to complicate things. What God wants most from us is to learn to receive and give love. This practical tool helps me do a better job of just that.

In my next blog, I will share a special tool I am using during Lent that I have found to be extremely helpful and practical.

Catholic Women’s Guide to Healthy Relationships Tip: Make sure the spiritual resolutions you are making are effective in helping you love God, yourself, and others better.
